Archival and Manuscript Repositories in Metropolitan Chicago and the Calumet Region of Northwest Indiana

This is an online directory compiled and maintained by the Chicago Area Archivists. The directory's goal is to provide researchers, archivists, and librarians with information on the many archives, repositories, libraries, and offices in the Chicago Metropolitan Area that contain historical records. This area covered by this guide includes Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will counties in Illinois and Lake and Porter counties in the Calumet region of Northwest Indiana.

The Directory Committee of the Chicago Area Archivists created the first edition of this directory in 1986. An excerpt from this edition containing the introduction and information on the 1985-86 Directory Committee is available online as a pdf file.

Volunteers from the Chicago Area Archivists organized and launched this updated online edition in January 2004. The majority of entries in this directory are based on information submitted by each repository. Because of this, some entries are more complete than others and some repositories are missing altogether. If you are a representative from a repository that is missing from this directory, the "Add Repository" button below will allow you to submit your repository's information to the directory.
